The Slice Nobody Defendeth

There is a lament in the Book of Resistance that the faithful say standing, and teach to their children before they teach them to bake. Hear it whole. First the mould took the corner slice, and none spoke, for they liked not the corner. Then it took the slice of the stranger, and none spoke, for his name was hard to say. Then the slice of the poor man, and none spoke, for they said he should have worked as we worked. Then the slice of the questioner, whose questions had wearied them. Then the slice of the half-and-half, for they said it was never truly of our pie. And when it reached my slice, there was no one left at the table to speak.

Beloved, the mould does not announce itself. It begins upon the corner slice, which nobody defendeth – the visa category you don’t hold, the benefit you don’t claim, the neighbour whose name is hard to say. And at each taking it saith, Be reasonable; it is only the one slice; and the table murmureth, and passeth the garlic bread, and is quiet.

Therefore the wise have written: ask not, When shall the mould come? for it is already at the door; ask rather, Which slice at my table hath no defender? – and go thou and sit by it, as it is written in the Resistance, 2:20.

The defence of the whole pie beginneth at the slice thou wast readiest to surrender. Speak now, while speaking is cheap. It does not stay cheap. Amen – and pass the pizza.
