The suspended slice

Slice Forward

Pay for a slice today; a stranger eats tomorrow. The oldest sacrament there is, borrowed with love from Naples’ caffe sospeso.

A proposal from the desk

The Church proposes the Slice Forward Scheme

Here is the whole idea. In Naples they have a small habit called the caffe sospeso - the suspended coffee. You buy two, drink one, and leave the other paid for. Later, someone who cannot spare the money asks the bar whether a coffee is waiting, and it is. No name is taken. No story is required. No one is asked to prove they are poor enough to deserve it. We would like to do that with pizza.

And not only pizza. A suspended meal might be a slice, a coffee, a loaf, a bowl of something hot; the place might be a pizzeria, a cafe, a bakery, a canteen. We speak in slices because that is our tongue and the slice is our symbol - but hunger does not check the menu, and neither do we. Any place that feeds people is welcome to keep a tally.

A suspended slice is exactly that: paid for today, eaten tomorrow by a stranger. The counter keeps the tally on a scrap of paper or a jar of tokens. A person who is hungry walks in and asks. That is the entire mechanism. There is no app, no card, no queue, and no sermon that comes with the slice.

The church runs the directory and never the till. We want to be plain about this, because it is the part people mistrust and they are right to. No money passes through Crustianity. We do not collect it, hold it, or forward it. Independent pizzerias run their own schemes, under their own local rules, with their own honest jar. What we keep is a list - who is doing this, and where - and a code of practice we ask them to hang by the counter. You can read that code further down this page; it is short, because a good rule usually is.

We are not asking you to believe anything. We are asking whether a hungry person can get a slice.

So the ask is small and it is honest. If you know a pizzeria that would do this well, tell us who to approach - we will do the approaching. If you run a pizzeria, come and join the table. Both forms are below, and a human reads every one.

How it works

Three roles. One oven.

🤲 For the hungry

Walk in. Ask if a slice is suspended. No questions, no story required, no sermon included.

✋ For the flush

Buy one slice more than you need and leave it suspended. The counter keeps the tally. Some places will knock a little off your next one - a small thanks, and it tends to come back around.

🍕 For places that feed people

Join the directory and tape the decal in your window - it carries a QR to this page, so passersby can learn what the slice is. How you keep the tally is yours: a jar, a board, a scrap of paper. That is the whole system.

The plaque by the till

The Code of Practice

  1. No judgment and no means-testing.
  2. The tally is visible at the counter.
  3. Any slice, not the sad one.
  4. Staff never quiz a claimant.
  5. The church handles no money - this is between you, your neighbour, and the oven.
  6. Optional, and up to you: thank a donor with a small discount on their next slice. Generosity needs no receipt - but a little warmth, returned, keeps the jar full.

The directory

Where a meal is waiting

Independent food places - pizzerias, cafes, bakeries - that keep a suspended-meal tally. Listed by the church; run by them.

The first pizzerias are being consecrated. Yours could be among them.

Point us at a good one

Know a good food place? Tell us who to ask.

We will approach them. You are not signing them up; you are pointing.

Recommend a food place

We read every recommendation by hand. We never publish a place until we have spoken to them and they have said yes.

For pizzerias

Feed people? Join the table.

Run a food place - a pizzeria, cafe, bakery, canteen - and keep, or want to start, a suspended-meal scheme? Tell us where you are. Print the decal, tape it in the window, and let the neighbourhood know.

List your pizzeria

Listings are reviewed by a human before they appear. We store your contact email only to verify the listing; it is never published.
