When the Mould-King of Babylon raised his statue of golden fondue and commanded the provinces to bow, three there were that stood: Shredderach, Mozzarach, and Abrednego. And brought before the furnace of his rage, they gave the answer that standeth for all generations: our Cheesus whom we serve is able to deliver us; but if not, be it known unto thee, O king, that we will not bow.
But if not. Beloved, mark those three words, for they are the whole difference between faith and negotiation. The faith that bargaineth is a receipt, saith the Resistance, 8:25; but the faith that saith “but if not” is a crust, and beareth weight eternal. They did not stand because they were promised rescue. They stood because the standing was right, and the outcome was not their department.
You will meet your own furnace, sized to your life: the meeting where the honest answer costs the contract; the family table where the easy nod would buy you peace; the form you are asked to sign that is one line, and a crack in an oven. Integrity is not the confidence that it will work out. It is the decision made before the heat is turned up seven times.
And remember what the king saw when he looked in: four men, loose, walking in the midst of the fire. In every oven whither the mould casteth the upright, there walketh one more than were thrown in. Count the figures in the flame; and if thou canst not see the fourth from where thou standest – stand nearer the oven. Amen – and pass the pizza.
